Built-in "whisper quiet" Air Compressor
The built-in "whisper quiet" air compressor is mounted inside the chassis of the 8610C or 310 GC where it provides a nearly silent supply of air for the FID or FID/DELCD detector flame.  The FID consumes 300 ml/min of air, which is 10 times the 20-30 ml/min consumption of hydrogen and carrier gas, so typically the air cylinder runs dry long before the other gases.  With the built-in air compressor, no air cylinder is required, simplifying field operations and saving the expense of replacing air cylinders on a regular basis.  The air compressor delivers unfiltered air to the FID, although some users choose to add a filter.  Even in moderately contaminated environments, the small amounts of hydrocarbons in the surrounding air cause no baseline problems for the FID, but in situations where ambient air quality fluctuates dramatically, an air cylinder may make sense.  In most cases, however, the built-in air compressor is a wonderful convenience and is highly recommended especially for GCs which will be used in the field.

Vacuum Pump interface
The Vacuum pump interface consists of a mains power
( 120 or 220 VAC ) outlet on the side of the 8610C or 310 GC into which a user-supplied vacuum pump is plugged.  The PeakSimple data system can turn the power to this receptacle on/off thus controlling the vacuum pump.  Typically the vacuum pump is used to draw gaseous samples through the traps for ambient air monitoring applications, or to load the loop of a gas sampling valve by pulling sample gas from a remote location.  Because the vacuum pump can be turned on for a precise length of time, the gas flow through the traps is very reproducible ( approx. 100ml/min ).
